Newswire reports that Customs Narcotics Control Unit officers arrested a 24-year-old Indian passenger at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake at about 1:15 a.m. on October 26. Newsfirst and Ada Derana also report an Indian national was arrested at the airport with Kush, while Lankadeepa reports a foreign passenger was intercepted there with a consignment valued at Rs. 51 million.

Newswire says the passenger arrived on Vietnam Airlines flight VN671 and tried to leave through the arrivals area’s Green Channel, intended for travellers without goods to declare. Newswire reports officers noticed suspicious behaviour, detained the passenger for checks and scanned the luggage.

Newswire reports that officers searched the luggage after the scan indicated possible suspicious items, finding sealed plastic packets containing narcotics. Newswire says examination identified 5.1kg of Kush cannabis, worth more than Rs. 51 million; Lankadeepa reports a value of Rs. 51 million, and Newsfirst describes the value as approximately or nearly Rs. 51 million.

Newswire reports that Customs, following preliminary inquiries, transferred the passenger, the seized cannabis and other evidence to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation and legal proceedings.
