Sri Lanka’s Irrigation Department extended a flood warning for the Nilwala River Basin by 48 hours, according to Rupavahini News and Ada Derana’s Tamil-language report. Rupavahini said the notice is valid until 6 p.m. on October 18.

The department’s decision followed heavy rainfall in the basin’s upper and middle catchment areas and an assessment of river gauge levels, Rupavahini reported. Minor flooding could affect low-lying parts of the Nilwala floodplain in six Divisional Secretariat divisions: Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda and Matara.

The Irrigation Department advised residents of the listed areas and drivers travelling through them to remain alert, according to Rupavahini. Newswire also reported that the department issued an Amber flood warning and cautioned that minor flooding could occur.
