Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology issued a severe lightning advisory at 11 a.m. on the 15th. Rupavahini News and Newswire report that it remains in effect until 1 a.m. on the 16th.

The areas named are the North Central, Eastern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, along with Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Gampaha, Colombo and Kurunegala districts. The department expects thunderstorms with severe lightning in some locations, particularly during the evening or night.

The department also cautioned that thunderstorms may bring temporary, localized strong winds. It asked the public to take safety measures to reduce the risks associated with lightning; Newswire says residents in affected areas were urged to stay alert during the advisory period.
