Kawanthissa, a tusker described by Ada Derana as iconic and widely loved, has died. Ada Derana’s Tamil-language report says the elephant had been ill and died on the morning of the 16th at Siyambalangamuwa.

Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa posted a tribute after the elephant’s death. The Daily Mirror reported that he portrayed the forest as giving the tusker a final farewell; Ada Derana also reported that Rajapaksa shared a tribute.
